Romans 6:5-11

“So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.”

God has freed us from sin, but often we don’t believe in his love enough to forgive ourselves. What is it that you have asked the Lord to forgive in you, but have not let go of yourself? This would be a good time to trust the Lord enough to forgive yourself.

Matthew 5:43-48

“Be perfect…as your Father in heaven is perfect.”

How is that for a difficult commandment! How are we to be perfect, never to make a mistake again? John Wesley encouraged us to be moving on to perfection. (As a bishop once asked me, "If you are not moving on to perfection, what are you moving toward?")

What I think Wesley meant was not that we would not make any more mistakes, but that there are times we are so connected to God that God works through us. When God does the work, it is perfect. Our time is not best spent trying to do things perfectly and feeling guilty when we don’t, but rather to spend our time connecting with God and let God do the heavy lifting through us.

Matthew 7:1-5

“Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye?”

Empathy, standing in the shoes of another person, seeing ourselves when we look into their face, enables us to see ourselves and the other person more clearly.  Pray that the Lord will open your eyes to see your own faults and the image of God created in your neighbor.

1 Peter 3:8-9

“Do not repay evil with evil or abuse for abuse; but on the contrary, repay with a blessing.”

How much more profitable our time would be if we spend it figuring out how to bless the person who has hurt us rather than how to get back at them.  Read Romans 12:14-21.

Colossians 3:12-17

“…clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness and patience.  Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.”

The best cure for bitterness is to remember Christ’s love for us.  Because Jesus loves us, we are to love others.  An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth leaves a world full of blind toothless people.  Read this news report Steve Isbell sent me:

Romans 8:35-39

Nothing “will be able to separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ our Lord.” (39b)

When we refuse to forgive ourselves, we are placing a wedge between God and us.  God is knocking on the door to your heart.  Allow the Lord to love you into forgiveness.

Psalm 103:1-3

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits - who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good as long as you live so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”

Blessing the Lord is more than words; it is living a life that shows you believe in his love and mercy.  We all have a past.  We are all sinful, broken people.  The question is: Have we learned from it?  Have we changed the behavior that has damaged God’s image created in us?  What is it God desires to forgive in you in order to make you a new creation?
