John 13:1-11

Simply put . . . unless we example service in our own lives, we cannot teach it or require it of others.

Jesus met the needs of so many, yet in a time when he knew what laid ahead for him personally, he stops and teaches a final lesson about service to his disciples.  He washed their stinking dirty feet.

Jesus taught by example.    May be consider loving others so much, that we do the same.

Dear Lord, help me have the heart to serve whomever needs me.  Open my eyes to the endless possibilities of service, for the sake of Your Kingdom, that I not be lifted up, but that You be lifted up.  Amen.

Mark 5:25-34

Let us never forget that serving is about helping others in need.   But let us also never forget that every time we serve others, we teach a little life lesson in faith, to those whom we serve, and to ourselves.

Jesus didn’t have to stop when He felt healing power go out of him into someone else.  After all, he was going to help a family with a sick child.  Yet he stops . . . and teaches a lesson about faith.

That lesson . . . the faith in our hearts is best lived out through compassion for others.  Jesus stops and tells the woman, “your faith has made you well. Go in peace. You are well!”

Every time we serve . . . let us share God’s love, and help people experience the peace that comes when a need is supplied.

Dear Lord, help me have the heart to serve whomever needs me.  Open my eyes to the endless possibilities of service, for the sake of Your Kingdom, that I not be lifted up, but that You be lifted up.  Amen.

Mark 6:30-44

The feeding of the 5,000 people is a great story of faith, belief, wonder and awe.

Simply put, the disciples saw no way for them to feed 5,000 people with the meager resources they had in hand.

I wonder if we thought the same thing when we reached out to increase the number of children we decided to feed this past summer through the Feed the Children program at the area apartment houses in our community and at our Grapevine Village?  We went from serving children for a week, to serving children for many weeks.  We served and feed children pretty much the entire summer.

We also learned the same lesson that Jesus taught the disciples.  If you serve someone who needs you, God will supply the resources that are needed.

Dear Lord, help me have the heart to serve whomever needs me. Open my eyes to the endless possibilities of service, for the sake of Your Kingdom, that I not be lifted up, but that You be lifted up.  Amen.

Luke 10:25-37

This is a very, very, very interesting story.  The person speaking to Jesus was an expert in religious law.  And as such an expert, this man would have clearly known that religious law required only two things: 1)  total devotion to loving God, and 2)  and total devotion to loving one’s neighbors.

Sometimes, we focus more on laws than the intent of the laws.

Consider, the first two men to walk past the injured Jewish businessman were religious leaders.  There response to someone in need?  They looked the other way.

The Samaritan traveler, a cultural enemy of the Jews, stops to help, out of love for one’s neighbor.

We serve as the Church not of out church law or duty. We serve out of love for our neighbors.

Dear Lord, help me have the heart to serve whomever needs me.  Open my eyes to the endless possibilities of service, for the sake of Your Kingdom, that I not be lifted up, but that You be lifted up.  Amen.

Matthew 25:34-40

The point of this parable is not the who, but the what—the importance of serving where service is needed. The focus of this parable is that we should love every person and serve anyone we can.

Something we have done in our church . . . is going out and verifying real needs.  We don’t meet and ask, “how do WE want to serve today.?”   We don’t do that.  Why?  Serving is not about us.  It’s about meeting the needs of others around us. That’s what being a church is all about.  Not building or signs . . . but caring for those around us.

Dear Lord, help me have the heart to serve whom ever needs me.  Open my eyes to the endless possibilities of service, for the sake of Your Kingdom, that I not be lifted up, but that You be lifted up.  Amen.

“As each has received a gift, employ it for one another…”

These are beautiful words to the church.  God gives us gifts to share and we share them with others to the glory of God.  Over the next few weeks, you are going to be given a number of opportunities by the church to share your gifts with others.  I hope you will be thinking of what gifts God has given you, so you can decide to share them to his glory.

Philippians 2:1-12

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus…”

The mind and heart of Jesus were those of a servant.  The greatest example of being a creature of God that Jesus gave us was that of being in service to others.  How are you following the example of Christ?  How are you being a servant?  How are you, like Jesus, “...emptying yourself and taking the form of a servant?”

Mark 10:35-45

“For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve…”

As I said Sunday, there is a rhythm to faith and ministry the Lord teaches us.  Spend time with God soaking up the Lord’s love, and then coming down from the mountaintop to share that love serving the needs of others... Being with God, then sharing the being of God. Too often people are overly concerned with how the church is serving them rather than how they can serve others. There is a balance.
