Helping Hands - Special Abilities Ministry
But Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 19:14
Helping Hands is our Special Abilities Ministry, based on Matthew 19:14, created to allow a way for individuals of all ages with special abilities to "come to me." Helping Hands provides support and opportunities for special needs children and adults to experience a personal relationship with God and fellowship within the church. We believe people with special abilities should have the opportunity to learn and grow in their Christian faith through a loving and nurturing environment adapted to accommodate their special abilities.

S.S. (Sunday School) Buddies assist children with special abilities during the Sunday
School hour so that each child can be included to the full extent of his or her ability. Buddies also allow parents/families to fully participate in the life of the church while knowing that their child is safe and cared for. When a child become Youth age, they continue to receive support in form of a “Lifeguard.” Lifeguards are in essence a buddy who continues to provide safe support while allowing the youth age students with special abilities to be included to the greatest extent and independence possible as they grow ‘deeper’ in their faith. For families who wish to worship together, quiet rooms are available at the back of the gym and in the Narthex of the main sanctuary for children or youth and their parents. These rooms allow everyone to still hear the sermon but are more suited toward the sensory requirements of babies, children or youth who could benefit from their use.
Bryan's Buddies Respite Night
Dates for 2016:
January 8, February 5, March 11, April 8, May 13
Bryan's Buddies is respite care that provides a safe and fun evening out for children with special abilities and their siblings held in the Family Life Center at our church. Held one Friday night per month at 6:30 PM during the school term, Bryan's Buddies cares for individuals with special abilities and their siblings, allowing their parents some time alone without having concerns for their children. This three hour respite also allows children time to interact with their peers.
Bryan's Buddies is named in honor of Bryan McMillon. Bryan was a small but powerful little boy with a heart full of love. He was a child with special abilities who blessed us with his loving smile. He could be seen walking the halls on Sunday morning, greeting everyone he saw. He touched many lives throughout our church and especially those of the Helping Hands (at that time, Dream Team) volunteers. We lost Bryan a few years ago and still feel his presence today in our hearts. We had Bryan with us for a very short period of his life, but he left us with an everlasting impression on our hearts. Bryan was called to serve God as one of his special angels, and is watching over his Buddies at FUMC Grapevine.
We would love to bring in new families with children with special abilities to Bryan's Buddies. All of our events are open to the community, so please invite friends or neighbors. All participants must complete a registration form with much-needed information for us to provide the best care for the children. You can find the registration form linked here and at the right side of this page.
V.B.S. Buddies help out during the week of Vacation Bible School. Buddies accompany children to the various activities that take place during the week. We believe that our children with special abilities deserve to have the opportunity to learn and grow alongside other children.
Our next Link event is coming in February...
