Senior PastorRole at First Church:
Senior Pastor

Started on Staff:
June, 2011

Education/Background:
I graduated from Highland Park High School in 1970 (Voted most likely to become a minister out of my graduating class, I think because I was always hanging around the church), Centenary College of Louisianna with a B.A. degree in Religion in 1974 and Perkins School of Theology, SMU, with a MTh (Master of Theology) in 1978. (Usually, the degree is called Master of Divinity, but they changed it for a short while at Perkins - some say because they knew I could never master divinity.)

Prior to serving at First Methodist Grapevine, John was Senior Pastor at Stonebridge United Methodist Church in McKinney for eight years. John also served at First Methodist Church Lewisville, Chapel Hill United Methodist Church in Farmers Branch, First Methodist Church Iowa Park and First Methodist Church Denton.

Family:
I have two sons. Aaron is 30 and Jared is 26. Both live in the area and continue to make their mother and father very proud.

Favorite Scripture and why:
Oh, so many, but I love John 14:17 because in it Jesus reminds me that God's spirit abides with me and is in me. There have been many times in my life when I have found comfort in knowing God's presence is that close and challenge in knowing I am called to expose that spirit to those around me.

Favorite Movie:
To Kill a Mockingbird

What I like best about my ministry:
It depends on the day, but generally give me a group of people who want to talk about the scriptures and their experiences with God and I am a happy camper.

For fun I enjoy:
Golf, cooking and being with family and friends.
