    Laurie Ann Egeland

Our hearts mourn the loss of our sweet and lovely Laurie Ann Egeland, a longtime resident of Grapevine, TX. Laurie battled cancer with dignity and grace, never giving up the fight or losing her warm and loving spirit. She died with peace, surrounded by her family, at home on Monday, December 19, 2011, at the age of 52.

Laurie was the kindest and most caring among us. People flocked to her - a loving wife, mother and grandmother, a homemaker, a teacher, a devoted community volunteer, and a friend to so many. To know Laurie was to love her, and she made it her mission to know just about everyone. Laurie was everything good about a person, living her own life with modesty, yet so giving to others. Sharp as a tack and sweet as they come, she never forgot a name, face, birthday or special occasion.

Laurie was born October 14, 1959, in Petoskey, MI. She graduated from Albion College in Albion, MI with a degree in finance and settled in Grapevine, TX, a suburb of Dallas. There she was employed as Vice President and Funds Manager of Ameritrust. She left her position in 1993 to devote all of her time and energy to raising a family and volunteer service. Laurie was instrumental in the development of the Colleyville Women's Club, was on the Board of the Grapevine Baseball Softball Association, and was very active in Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County. As an educator, she focused her talent and energy as a tireless school volunteer, tutor and leader, last serving as Grapevine High School PTSA President for nearly two years.

With her husband John and youngest son T.J., Laurie also made a home in Spartanburg, SC for several years. While in Spartanburg, Laurie was active in the Junior League and on the Board of the Wofford Terrier Club. She also earned a second degree in elementary education from Converse College and served as a volunteer and substitute teacher at Pine Street Elementary School. Laurie developed and maintained many loving friendships while in South Carolina.

Laurie's lasting legacy is her family, all of whom mourn her passing but feel so fortunate to have had her in their lives for the short time they did.

Laurie leaves behind husband, John Egeland; children, T.J. Egeland, Susan Egeland Kimble, and Jimmy Egeland; son-in-law, Patrick Kimble; daughter-in-law, Vanessa Egeland; granddaughter, Annie Kimble; mother, Nancy Hodgkiss; brothers, Dan Hodgkiss and Tom Hodgkiss and their families; and countless friends. Laurie is preceded in death by her father, Don Hodgkiss; and sister, Julie Hodgkiss.

At Laurie's request, the family will hold a memorial service celebrating her life on Saturday, February 4, 2012, at First United Methodist Church in Grapevine, TX at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made in Laurie's name to the Grapevine High School PTSA or to Converse College in Spartanburg, SC.

An online memorial has been set up for Laurie.
