Missions and Community Outreach Work
Local Mission Days
First Methodist helps those in need by doing home repairs and providing support during emergencies.Twice a year we have local mission days - once in the spring and once in the fall. Spring Into Missions and Fall Into Missions are times when we go out into the community on a Saturday and help people with home repairs, yard clean-up, etc. Show your compassion for others by taking part in these ministries as they occur throughout the year.
Spring Into Missions a Success
Clearing brush, planting, installing cabinets, screens, floors and doors, painting, repairing, building, smiling, talking, eating donuts, making friends, hugging, crying tears of joy. These are just a few scenes from last Saturday's Spring into Missions. Over 60 people gave up a Saturday to help our neighbors in need in 15 different projects in Grapevine and two other communities. Our church joined with United Methodists all over the nation in the Change the World event to make a difference through serving others. Thank you to Eric Erwin who coordinated this event as well as our project leaders: Greg McCarter, Aaron Borbon, Rich Reece, Steve Lux, David White, David Watson, Scott Thiel, OC Hailey, Sandy James, Joe Howell, Rick Davies, David McClaren, Kathy Selvidge, Brad Alexander and Clem Harris. One neighbor was heard saying, "This is a miracle. I see God in each of you!" Click here for pictures.
On-Going Opportunities for Community Outreach
Throughout the season of Lent, we "filled the hole" for people in need. (Not sure what "the hole" is? Click here to read about the book The Hole in Our Gospel.) We have on-going needs that you can fill any time. We will be keeping various needs in front of you, so watch for them in E-News and Sunday's bulletin.
Current top needs (updated 05-05-2010):
STILL NEEDED: Bedding for a full-size bed.
NEW: Good walking shoes for an elderly diabetic woman.
Contact Bev Campisi at beverlyc@fumcg.org to help with any of these.
Here are some needs we know of that are on-going:
Funds (any amount is needed) to help our neighbors in need with their electric bills. Make checks payable to the church, with Benevolence Fund, on the memo line. Contact Trudy Hughes at trudyh@fumcg.org.
Serve on a team of people who will work on minor car repairs for neighbors in need. Contact Rich Whitlock, rdubs9603@yahoo.com.
Provide funds for ongoing housecleaning for a couple with health issues. Make checks payable to the church with "neighbor housecleaning" on the memo line. Contact Trudy Hughes at trudyh@fumcg.org.
Support all of our local missions ministries (God Can, Project Read, Weekend Food, etc.)
Donate Box Tops for Education (clipped from commonly-used products) to Cannon Elementary. Click here for a list of products from which you can clip Box Tops.
The Texas Center for the Visually Challenged badly needs your old computers. They are refurbished and equipped with special software that speaks to the users, then shipped all over the US. If you have an old computer to donate, Dick Guckel will gladly pick it up and deliver it for you. Contact Dick at 817-488-2005 (home), 682-553-8226 (cell) or captain.dick@verizon.net.
Questions about where you can help? Contact Volunteer Coordinator Bev Campisi at beverlyc@fumcg.org or 817-797-4936.
