Make a Difference by Reading!
Project Read reaches out to the children of our community through reading. There are several ways for you to get involved right now!
-
Project Read at GCISD Summer School—Read one-on-one with a struggling reader at Glen Hope Elementary for 30 minutes to 1 hour on Monday through Friday mornings, June 9-July 2. We can schedule you for a time, which is convenient for you, and we can also schedule around your vacation or other obligations. Training provided, background check required.
-
Project Read at Feed Our Kids Sites—Give away gently used children’s books and read to children at the feeding sites (local apartment complexes and trailer parks) on Tuesdays throughout the summer; from 11:30 a.m.- 1 p.m. We will assign you to site, give you a partner and can schedule you according to your availability.
-
Project Read After School Program—A steering committee has been formed to launch a one-day-a-week after school reading/craft/snack program for neighborhood children on Mondays beginning in the fall. We need volunteers willing to work with the children, plan logistics and help with snacks and crafts. Let us know if you are interested in learning more!
If you would like to volunteer for one of these areas, please sign up on Check-In. Questions? Contact Pat Laster (817-421-6320 or patlaster@verizon.net) or Joan O'Brien (jobrien2000@msn.co).

Project Read is expanding its mission in 2008 and now needs to replenish its book supply to meet the needs of the children in the community. Thanks to the overwhelming response to the book drive last year, Project Read was able to touch many children’s lives through the gift of your books. We want to touch the community again this year and need your support.
Project Read will be accepting new or gently used children’s book throughout the month of January. There will be a collection bin in front of the church office for donations. If you have a large quantity of books you would like to have picked up just let us know and we would be happy to help. For questions contact Joan O’Brien or Pat Laster.
The Project Read Team feels a strong calling to begin an outreach program designed to focus on children who live within a mile or two of our church. We want to do this in the form of an after school fellowship/reading program for the 1st-5th grade age group. The program will take place on Monday afternoons from 3:15-4:15 PM on the FUMC Grapevine campus. We are currently in the early planning stages of this program and are looking for church members who feel God nudging them into this type of outreach ministry.
We need volunteers who could commit to being at the program at a scheduled time to help work with the kids. However, there are other program needs that will require different gifts with various commitment levels. Here are just a few ways you can help on a part-time basis:
-
Coordinate weekly volunteers
-
Shop for and plan snack schedule
-
Track attendance
-
Help with publicity
We believe an outreach program such as this will further establish FUMC Grapevine as a community partner and will lead to similar programs. So, if you have a desire to share God’s love with the children in our community, please join us as we begin planning and organizing this outreach ministry. If you would like to make a commitment to this ministry or just have ideas, concerns or questions, please contact Joan O’Brien (817-329-6649).
